We all like to pat ourselves on the back and say, that we can handle constructive criticism and actually that we welcome it. However, deep down it is not really a true statement that we make.
Really, what constructive criticism is supposed to be is words that are meant to help us in a kind way that in some aspects will improve in us in a specific area. Most often this type of criticism comes from another individual. It could be a teacher or your boss or even a social worker. Constructive criticism can also come down on a more serious note in a group therapy session perhaps for individuals that are suffering from psychological problems. Parents often use this type of criticism when they are trying to get their children to better themselves.
Quite often, this can send up a red flag when one is trying to offer criticism in a kind way to another individual. They begin to feel like their self-esteem is being challenged or their character.
Individuals that think that they are being helpful by offering this type of constructive criticism is in fact doing more damage than good. Most often, if this is something that they do on a regular basis they will find that others start to shun them quite often because they really are not interested in their criticisms.
If you really have to offer some sort of constructive criticism to someone make sure that it addresses the problem not the person. One of the biggest dangers of this is that it will be perceived as a negative action.
Going on from constructive criticism, we could move on to self-criticism. This is often when many people are too hard on them and are constantly judging their thoughts and their actions. When this begins to happen to you or starts to become a pattern then you need to challenge the thoughts that are provoking your self-criticism. Try to look at them objectively and try to remove yourself from the issue and look at it from that point of view.
No matter what form of criticism was talking about it all has its place but it is something that has to be used cautiously and in the right manner in order to obtain positive results from it. It has a tendency to create negativity very easily and this can just be more damaging to the individual that it is directed to
